The Story of Huckle Hill Flowers

At Huckle Hill Farm, generations have farmed on this stony loamy land, growing crops, cutting hay, and raising livestock. We keep that tradition alive today with our passion for flower farming, inspired by the determined “go-a-head” spirit of those who came before us.

With surprise and delight, while walking our fields, we uncover reminders of the past—rust-coated horseshoes, well-worn shovels—each artifact a reminder of the chores and hard work that nurtured this land. While we don’t employ draft horses, we do cultivate our fields with the same hardworking dedication. We use mechanized walk-behind plows and harrows, cover cropping, and regenerative practices to nourish the soil. We catch rain off the roof and dig swales to capture water. It’s an all-out effort to create a productive ecosystem and pollinator welcome center. We love our honey and bumble bees as much as they love our Lavender, Sunflowers, Dahlias, and other beautiful blooms. When spring rolls around, the farm starts to hum!

Our goal is simple: to surprise and delight our customers with long-lasting, beautiful, fresh-cut flowers because flowers…

  • Brighten spaces

  • Lift spirits

  • Calm the mind

  • Spark creativity, and

  • Connect people to the landscape and changing seasons.

Each bloom we harvest, beginning in the early morning light or at dusk—sometimes by headlamp before sunrise—is as close to just-picked freshness as possible. When you stop by our welcoming farmstand in Bernardston, MA, “go-a-head”, bring home a bouquet that carries the energy and beauty from the heart of Huckle Hill Farm. Make someone’s day!

Meet Head Petal Picker Pam

My flower farming journey began on Sundays alongside my grandfather, Antonio, with a trowel in hand. Despite our conversations being limited by a language barrier, it didn’t stop me from learning by example, hands-on digging, weeding, and harvesting in the garden. Among his tall zinnias, trellised roses, prolific pansies, bespoke dahlias, and abundant vegetable rows, I became transfixed by the beauty of flowers and plants.

Decades later, my mother-in-law, Betty, who grew up on a farm, explained the importance of soil health and how to create and use compost. Today, I use the same compost methods, making rich compost for my plants. She focused on these Ps: plant placement and perennials. Today, I grow more drought-tolerant perennials for fresh-cut market bouquets and generously compost my fields. And like a good real estate agent, I’m always searching for the best location for each plant.

Fun Fact: Peonies are my favorite blooms.

Fond Memory: Gifting peonies to my elementary school teachers.

Just as Claude Monet felt indebted to flowers for his artistic path, I owe my becoming a flower farmer to Antonio and Betty. Family techniques and traditions for growing healthy flowers are a gift from the past that I carry forward into the present as a late bloomer, reconnecting with my roots.

I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.
— Claude Monet - Impressionist Painter (1840 - 1926)
